My book is titled Righteous Riches: the Word of Faith Movement in Contemporary African American Religion (Oxford, 2005). In it I investigate the comtemporary Christian movement which teaches followers that they should expect material reward from God in this present life in exchange for their faithfulness as born-again believers. When they die they are also promised Heaven.
This controversial, Charismatic movement within the larger Evangelical community of Christian believers has come into prominence in the decades since the 1980s, and it is currently being carried abroad to countries in Latin America, African, and Asia, where it continues to grow in popularity. The largest church in America is also part of this movement although that fact is not as widely known as might be expected.
Righteous Riches was the first academic book to deal with the topic, and it continues to be cited by scholars doing work touching upon the idea that it is God’s intention that faithful Christians not only go to Heaven when they die but that they live lives of ease, freedom from sickness, and material wealth while on the earth.
Righteous Riches was selected an “Outstanding Academic Title” of 2006 by Choice Magazine.
