Course: Survey of Ethnicity in the U.S., (AAS100).
I use this text by Sociologists Joe R. Feagin and Clairece Booher Feagin. I use it primarily because of its focus on studying the relations between the various racial/ethnic groups that settled and arrived in what would eventually become the United States of America. Each of the major racial/ethnic groups is covered in its own chapter(s), and basic sociological terms, theories, and approaches are covered as well.
Although I have found this book useful over the years, I’ve found it necessary in lectures to emphasize much more strongly the interrelatedness of the experiences of the groups covered than is commonly done in text books on the subject. No book is perfect for all needs, but I have used this one for the past several years and add my perspective as well as additional readings to help round out the presentation.
